Explanation
The Masjid is the most beloved place to Allah on earth, and entering it is a transition from the busy world into a sacred space of worship. By reciting this dua, a believer acknowledges that entering the house of Allah and performing Ibadah (worship) is only possible through His Rehmat (Mercy). We ask Allah to open His doors of blessings so that our hearts may find peace and our prayers may be accepted. It is a humble request for spiritual entry before the physical entry.
Is there a Quranic Or Hadith reference?
This dua is firmly established in the Hadith found in Sahih Muslim (Hadith 713) and Sunan Abi Dawud. The Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) taught that when any of you enters the mosque, you should send salutations upon the Prophet and then say, "Allahummaftah li abwaba rahmatik." While the specific words are from the Hadith, the Quran refers to the concept of Allah's Mercy in Surah Fatir (35:2): "Whatever Allah grants to people of mercy—none can withhold it."
