Explanation

When we look into a mirror, we naturally focus on our physical appearance. Islam encourages us to use this moment not just to appreciate Allah’s creation of our face, but to seek inward perfection as well. This dua is a profound reminder that physical beauty is a gift, but moral beauty (character/Akhlaq) is what truly defines a believer. By reciting this, we ask Allah to make our character as pleasing and attractive to Him as He made our outward appearance to others. It helps maintain humility, ensuring we don't become vain about our looks, but instead strive for inner righteousness.

Is there a Hadith reference?

Yes, this dua is authentically reported in the Sunnah. It is found in several collections, such as Musnad Ahmad (Hadith 24403). It is narrated that when the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) would look into a mirror, he would say:

"Allahumma kama hassanta khalqi fa hassin khuluqi." (O Allah, just as You have made my outward appearance beautiful, make my character beautiful as well.)

While there is no specific verse in the Quran that dictates this exact phrasing, the concept of aligning one's character with one's outward conduct is a recurring theme in the Quran (e.g., Quran 64:3, which mentions Allah formed us in the best of shapes).

Summary

(English) Reciting this dua is a beautiful way to balance external vanity with internal growth. It teaches us that while physical beauty is a blessing from Allah, true excellence lies in our manners, integrity, and character. By making this a habit, we constantly invite Allah's guidance to improve our behavior, reminding ourselves that what is inside our hearts matters just as much as what the mirror reflects.

(Hinglish) Yeh dua hmein yaad dilati hai ki sirf surat (appearance) hi nahi, balki seerat (character) bhi khoobsurat honi chahiye. Jab hum aaine mein apni shakal dekhte hain, toh yeh dua parh kar hum Allah se request karte hain ki jis tarah Usne hamare chehre ko banaya hai, usi tarah hamare ikhlaq aur kirdaar ko bhi behtareen bana de. Yeh ek chota sa amal hamein ghuroor (pride) se bachata hai aur hmein apni inner beauty par tawajo dene ka sabaq deta hai.

Islam mein physical beauty ke muqable mein achhe ikhlaq (character) ko kyun zyada ehmiyat di gayi hai?
