Explanation

This profound supplication is recited during the burial process, specifically when pouring three handfuls of earth into the grave. It serves as a stark reminder of the cycle of human existence: origin, death, and resurrection. By reciting these words, we acknowledge that our physical bodies are made from the elements of the earth and will eventually decompose back into it. However, the prayer doesn't end at death; it affirms the belief in the Day of Judgment, where every soul will be raised again for accountability. It is a moment of deep reflection for the living, grounding us in the reality of our temporary stay in this world.

Is there a Quranic Or Hadith reference?

This is a direct Quranic Reference. These words are found in Surah Ta-Ha (20:55). While the Quranic verse establishes the truth of our creation and return, the practice of reciting it in three parts while throwing soil is a well-known Sunnah and tradition. According to various narrations, when the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) buried the deceased, he would recite:

  1. Minha khalaqnakum (From it We created you) with the first handful.

  2. Wa fiha nu’idukum (And into it We return you) with the second.

  3. Wa minha nukhrijukum taratan ukhra (And from it We bring you back again) with the third.

Summary

(English) This dua highlights the three stages of human life: creation from clay, returning to the soil at death, and being resurrected for the afterlife. It humbles the human spirit by reminding us of our humble beginnings and our ultimate destiny. Reciting this at a grave provides closure for the living and reaffirms faith in the Day of Resurrection.

(Hinglish) Yeh dua mitti dete waqt insaan ko uski asliyat yaad dilati hai ke hum mitti se bane hain aur mitti mein hi mil jana hai. Iske teen hisse humein paidaish, maut aur qayamat ke din dobara zinda hone ka yaqeen dilate hain. Yeh dua humein sikhati hai ke duniya fani (temporary) hai aur asli thikana aakhirat hi hai.

Kya aapne kabhi socha hai ke mitti ki ye dua humein zindagi ki keemat kaise samjhati hai?
